The beginnings
Let us introduce you with the Company at first. To get deep insight we believe you should meet Mr. Ales Gorkic, Ph. D., the Innovator as well as Mrs. Barbara Rakovec Gorkic, founder and CEO of the Company. In spite to our short official business history we have so much to offer, as the members of our team worked in this segment years before joining the Company.
Well, founders of the Company like to say that everything started in their bedroom, and then moved into their kitchen, their living room and even into their kid’s room. Have you already got the picture? The photo below illustrates their dedication and inspiration:
The first question that everyone would make is why have we decided to work in this segment? What made us believe we could make something new or innovative? What made us think we can make a difference?
Well, after years of experience and extended work with research and development projects in Laboratory of Optodynamics and Laser Applications at Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of University of Ljubljana, the first issue Mr. Ales had to deal with was a purchase of brand new smart camera for Laboratory needs, precisely for the scanner machine project they were working on. When he started seeking for a smart camera, he realized that all cameras available in the Market were at that time either too expensive or not satisfying their needs. The Faculty was not in the position to invest so much money in a camera, so Mr. Ales decided to build one. And that’s how the story of success begins. He started with exploring his needs and perspectives and what the Market has to offer, looking for the most powerful components and components that were not even considered as possible solution never before. He succeeded to build his very first camera in a few months only. It was based on FPGA and integrated the best lenses and bandwidth available. And that was in 2001! The camera had a bigger sensor and smaller core for inside image processing and was made for a 3D Rotational Laser profilometer specially. After that Mr. Ales kept experimenting with different components and possibilities following his goal to turn impossible to possible and to offer something that anyone else could not.
His wife, Mrs. Barbara had no other possibility than to follow his path and support him in best possible way. She held the cables when was needed, spent her time for seeking the components and suppliers, took care of purchasing, and of course all family things, enabling Mr. Ales to devote himself to Cameras and FPGA´s.
Thanks to Mr. Ales´s innovator spirit and commitment to help every person to solve the problem by offering the best possible solution, he decided to make a new step in his career and go further more. Working as a researcher did not give him enough satisfaction with taking solutions from theory to practice. He had only one wish: to solve the problem in the real world! He spent hours, days and nights researching and testing components and software. Finally Mrs. Barbara have had it enough and made a crucial turnover in his life. She initiated the idea of Family enterprise, so the two of them joined their knowledge, experiences and enthusiasm and founded OptoMotive, mechatronics Ltd. Mrs. Barbara obliged to take care for operation of the Company and Mr. Ales went on with his development of a brand new camera.
As a sworn professional he decided to include more experts and scientist, so he invited different domestic and foreign Institutions and Universities to join him. Thanks to an extensive and fruitful collaboration with highly qualified experts, the first Company´s camera named Cameleon was born. That camera became a foundation for all next generations of our cameras. The second generation named Camelopard was developed a year later. It was more sophisticated and innovative than Cameleon, and much promising then any camera available in the Market. After such a huge step, he spent some time on studying the new technologies. He made a deep insight into the Machine Vision Market and found out that all what we could get from it does not cover all customers’ needs. Existing products offer either fast picture acquisition or huge FPS rate or fast communication protocol, but none image processing or image compression inside the camera. This encouraged the team to test every possibility of building a camera which incorporates all key components, so that final product could offer all features together. After a full year of intensive work our team reached the Goal. Today, we can proudly introduce our latest and third generation of Innovative and UNIQUE FPGA based camera family named VELOCIRAPTOR.
Today
OptoMotive is developing FPGA based optomechatronic solutions. The Company is specialized in FPGA based industrial and non-industrial high-speed intelligent cameras and architectures for demanding and real-time processing machine vision solutions.
OptoMotive assortment of modular high-speed intelligent cameras Cameleon, Camelopard and Velociraptor with its flexible architecture covers wide array of uses. Expandable FPGA architecture and real-time processing gives cameras a chance to control a process at a very high speed without any additional control units (camera centric systems).
